It is with sadness that the family of Elsie Vergara Stidham announces her passing on Sunday, March 2, 2014. Elsie was born in the Bronx, New York, August 9, 1922 and was a lifelong resident of Hopewell, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Felicia Cordora Vergara; sister, Marian Vergara Letchworth; brother, Russell Vergara, Sr.; and her beloved son, Paul Emery Stidham. She is survived by her devoted husband of 66 years, Emery Junior Stidham; daughters, Elisa Stidham Carraway and her husband, James (Butch), Marian Stidham Smith and her husband, Mike; sons, Christopher Stidham and his wife, Pam, Marty Stidham and his wife, Kim; daughter-in-law, Dora Stidham. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Julia Winchell Jayatalika and her husband, Suresh, Tripp Carraway and his wife, Suzanna, Kendall Carraway, Lexie, Kelsey, Alex, and Adam Stidham; brothers, James Vergara, Sr., Francis Vergara; several nieces and nephews and extended family and friends. Elsie was an active member of Saint James Catholic Church where she served on several committees. She was devoted to her family and her faith. A Christian Wake service will be from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at St. James Catholic Church, 510 W. Poythress Street, Hopewell, VA., 23860. Visitation will follow also at the church from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m on Friday, March 7, 2014 at the church.
