Elizabeth (Beth) Barnard Nickels, 93, passed away at her home â??Sunnysideâ? in Prince George, Va. on March 21, 2012. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Samuel Benjamin Nickels, Jr.; her mother, Judith Fenner Barnard and her father, Edgar C. Barnard. She is survived by â??closeâ?? cousins, Ann Brooks Givens, Betsy Ferebee Phillips and Lloyd Barnard. Beth was a life-long member of Merchants Hope Church.
Beth was born at â??Sunnysideâ? and lived there her entire life. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from The College of William and Mary in 1939. Beth taught 1½ years in public schools and during that time enrolled in classes in engineering and architectural subjects. She first took a position at Solvay (Allied Chemical) and then with the Post Engineer at Ft. Lee. Her talents were recognized by Marcellus Wright, Sr. and she joined the architectural staff of Marcellus Wright & Son in 1947. Fourteen years later, she moved over to the engineering firm of Torrence, Dreelin & Associates. When the Richmond Technical Center opened in 1968, Beth accepted the position of Industrial Drafting Instructor and taught there for 17 years. She is recognized as the first woman architect in Richmond and one of the first women architects in the state. The â??Beth Nickels Architectureâ? collection is archived at The Library of Virginia.
Upon her retirement in 1984, Beth and Sam established Home Help which was the first company in the area to supply live-in help for the disabled and elderly. They operated this business until 2001 following Samâ??s death.
