Edith R. Horner passed away peacefully on September 26, 2024, at the Petersburg Home for Ladies, where she lived for over seven years. She was 96 years old. She was born in Hopewell, and grew up on her family farm in Chesterfield with her two sisters and three brothers. Family was always a big part of her life. She enjoyed being at the cabin on the Rappahannock River, where she served as the treasurer of the homeowners' association for many years. She graduated from Hopewell High School, Richard Bland College, and VCU.
Edith gave back to her community in many ways. She taught high school at Hopewell High and at several Christian schools. She really loved the years she spent teaching US History to high school students at West End Christian School, in Hopewell.
Edith was devoted to her family and enjoyed being with her family and friends.
She was active in church and in the community. She sang in the choir and taught Sunday school at West End Presbyterian Church, in Hopewell, and River's Edge Bible Church, in Prince George. She participated in many bible study groups. She was president of the Hopewell AARP, volunteered at the Prince George food pantry, was an active member of the Bethlehem Knitting group, who made blankets and quilts for those in need, and several other volunteer organizations.
Edith was loved by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Horner; and her son, Donald Horner. She is survived by her son, Stanley Horner, his wife, Janas, their son, Kris and daughter, Sara Warren; her other son, Steve Horner, his wife, Jane, their son, Wyatt and daughter, Amy; and Rustin Horner, son of the late Donald Horner. She has five great-grandchildren; and many relatives in her extended family. We are all blessed to have had her in our lives.
The celebration of her life will be held at 10:00 am, on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at the River's Edge Bible Church, 11311 James River Drive, North Prince George. Following the service, she will be laid to rest in her family plot at Bermuda Memorial Park, 1901 Bermuda Hundred Road, Chester VA. The family is being served by the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to River's Edge Bible Church, 11311 James River Drive, North Prince George, VA 23860.
