Dorothy Cotman Mabry

September 22, 1930 — August 25, 2013

Dorothy Cotman Mabry, 82, known to everyone as "Dot" passed away early Sunday morning, august 25, 2013 at MCV hospital. She was born in Hopewell on Sept 22, 1930 and lived in Hopewell her entire life. She was the daughter of the late Waverly Cotman and Annie Hill Cotman, and predeceased by her husband, Hilliard Stevens Mabry, Sr. (Buck) and her brother, James M. Cotman (Buddy). She is survived by her sister, Virginia C. Fayed (Ginna) who will deeply miss her sweet little sister. Dot graduated Hopewell High School in 1948. She started her career as a secretary with the Harrison Law Firm, and retired in 1993 as the payroll accountant for Firestone having devoted 33 years of dedicated service. After retirement, her life began anew and she realized many dreams -- she became a grandmother and a wonderful artist, traveled to several European countries, and became a dedicated community servant for many years as a volunteer at John Randolph Hospital. She was a loving and devoted mother to her three children and their spouses, Anne and Gary Rowlett of Prince George County, Va, Hilliard Stevens Mabry, Jr. of Va. Beach, Va, and Elizabeth and Beck Haviland of Roanoke, Va. She was a supportive, loving, and involved grandmother, and adored her three grandchildren Samantha Mabry, Aynsley Haviland and Baker Haviland. Recently, Dot was a resident at the Petersburg Home for Ladies where she received affectionate and dedicated care from the entire staff. Her final weeks of life were spent surrounded by her loving family, and the most amazing staff of doctors, nurses and caregivers at MCV who watched over her as if she were their own mother. We are truly grateful for their care. A memorial service will be held at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Hopewell at 3:30 p.m. Friday, August 30. The family will receive guests at the funeral home immediately following the memorial service. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to Smile Train, a charity that mom was a passionate donor. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com .
