Donald Edward Strouth

Donald Edward Strouth, 83, entered into God's eternal kingdom on June 25, 2026. He was the epitome of what it means to be a good and faithful servant. Devoted to his family and the people that resided in his home of Hopewell, Virginia, Don established himself as a distinguished community member. Most importantly, he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

Don was born on May 3, 1943 in Bland County, Virginia. As he reached adolescence, Don worked diligently to make a life for himself despite coming from humble beginnings. He was a successful basketball player and student. He graduated as salutatorian of his class from Bland County High School in 1961. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Army and was stationed at Red River Army Depot in Texarkana, Texas. While stationed in Texas, he met the love of his life and wife of 63 years, Margaret. After completing three years in the armed forces, the family moved to Hopewell, Virginia in 1965.

Upon moving to Hopewell, Don was employed at Firestone Synthetic and Textiles Company. He worked at Firestone for 31 years and held many positions, the last being the manager of purchasing. When Firestone closed, he enjoyed working for Colonial Downs and R.G. Mineral Sands. During the last 10 years of his career, he was employed by Allegheny Warehouse Company, INC., in Richmond, VA. Following his retirement, he spent endless hours with his granddaughters whom he held so dear to his heart.

Don is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret. He is also survived by two beloved daughters, Mary Kimberly Shirer (Scotty) and Debra Jane Thompson; and three treasured grandchildren, Chandler (Brock), Kassidy (Caleb), and Kourtney. He is survived by his siblings, Frank Newberry (Kim), Barbara Young (John), and Robby Strouth (Amy). Don was fortunate to have close friends in the Kippax neighborhood for the last 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Brown Hounshell Strouth and Walter Hubert Strouth; step-father, Leighton Price Newberry; brothers, Mark Strouth, Eric Strouth, Robert Newberry, and Stephen Newberry.

Don was an active member of his community and was a member of the Hopewell Optimist Club. During his tenure as president, he received the honor of being named a Distinguished President. He was a commentator for Hopewell High School basketball games for 30 years while working with TJ Video. As many know, Don loved to talk. He enjoyed being the master of ceremonies for numerous community events. Don's love for youth sports led to becoming a youth basketball coach and baseball umpire. He attended St. John's Episcopal Church for over 30 years alongside his family. He served on the church vestry and its various committees, completing projects that still benefit the church to this day.

Most of all, Don enjoyed the little things that life had to offer, navigating life with an optimistic outlook. He enjoyed watching sports, especially his beloved Dallas Cowboys. He took care of all three of his grandchildren, and supported them at swim meets, recitals, and events. Spending time with family and friends was what he treasured most. He will be remembered for his bright smile, humor, and never-ending love for his family and friends. His legacy will live on through them, and the lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Optimist Club of Hopewell, and St. John's Episcopal Church in Hopewell.

A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 505 Cedar Lane, Hopewell, VA. 23860, on July 16, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. Interment in the church cemetery will immediately follow the service. The family will receive friends for a reception in Ribble Hall following interment.
