Deborah D. Ripchick

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Deborah D. "Debbie" Ripchick, age 70, of Hopewell, Virginia, who died on July 12, 2025, after a short illness. A beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose warmth and spirit touched all who knew her, Debbie, a true Hopewell native, built a life rich in dedication, adventure, and, most importantly, love for her family.

Born and raised in Hopewell, Debbie was the daughter of the late Edward and Anita Dean. She was a proud 1973 graduate of Hopewell High School and dedicated 39 years of her life to public service at Fort Lee. Debbie's professional journey at Fort Lee was a testament to her unwavering commitment and quiet determination. Starting as a GS-3 Clerk Stenographer, she steadily climbed the ranks over 39 years, culminating in her role as a GS-12 at CASCOM G6. This ascent speaks volumes about her work ethic, intelligence, and the respect she earned from her colleagues. She dedicated decades to her service, leaving a lasting mark through her diligent work.

Upon retirement, Debbie embraced a new chapter with open arms, indulging her passion for travel. She explored the vast landscapes of the United States, finding particular solace and joy on the sunny beaches of the South. These journeys were not just about seeing new places; they were about experiencing life to the fullest. Yet, no matter how far she roamed or how beautiful the scenery, her heart always yearned for home. The absolute best part of any trip, she often found, was the moment she could return to the loving embrace of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Their presence was her anchor, her greatest happiness, and the true compass of her life.

Debbie's legacy is woven into the lives of her cherished family. She instilled in them the values of perseverance, the joy of discovery, and the profound importance of family bonds. Her daughters, her many grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren were the lights of her life, and her love for them was boundless and evident in every interaction. Debbie is survived by her two daughters, Jacqueline "Jackie" Emmert and Angela "Nikki" Thompson; her grandchildren, Donald Sloan II and his fiancée, Brooke Harris, of Hopewell, Zachary Sloan and his wife, Nicole, of St. Hedwig, TX, Mackenzie Dawson, Rhiannon Emmert, Riley Dawson, Jacob Emmert, and Michael A. Dawson, all of Hopewell; and her great-grandchildren, Emberleigh Sloan and Isabelle Sloan, of Hopewell, and Richard and Charlotte Sloan, of St. Hedwig, TX. She is also survived by her brothers, Gary Dean and his wife, Ellen, of Dunn, NC, and Talmadge Dean and his wife, Brooke, of Taylors, SC; her sister, Robin Grigsby and her husband, Buddy, of Winchester, VA; as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

Debbie lived a life characterized by quiet strength, a deep sense of duty, and an immense capacity for love. She will be profoundly missed, but her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and all those fortunate enough to have known her. May her memory be a blessing and an inspiration to us all.

A memorial service honoring Debbie's life will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
