David Whitfield Poole, 101, went to be with the Lord on May 10, 2026. David was born to the late John Wesley Poole and Idora Fuller Poole on November 11, 1924 and grew up in Stony Creek, Virginia where he enjoyed a childhood filled with hunting and fishing. After his high school graduation, he served in the troop carrier command of the US Army Air Corps during World War 2. Later, he pursued his studies at Virginia Tech where he was a member of the 1950 graduating class. During his college years, David played professional baseball with the Chicago Cubs organization from 1947-1949.
While still a Va Tech student and Chicago Cubs baseball player, David married the former Charlotte Winfield, and they were blessed with three children. David was predeceased by his son, David W. Poole, Jr. and survived by son, Stephen R. Poole and daughter, Cheryl Umbach and her husband, Art. David's legacy includes 3 children, 4 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. David was predeceased by his wife Charlotte W. Poole; his sister, Esther Locke, and her husband Ray.
David spent his entire 36-year career with Dominion Energy (VEPCO), and he was a Division Vice President upon retirement. An active Methodist church member, David also participated in community service with the United Way, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts, Rotary Club and State Chamber of Commerce. David's faith was an important part of his life, and he lived what he believed. A true southern gentleman, David loved people and children, and people were naturally drawn to him and his easy-going personality. David was cherished by all who knew him.
David and Charlotte enjoyed 66 years of marriage and were blessed with the good health to travel to every US state and several overseas countries. When not traveling, David enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing up to his 101st birthday.
David's family would like to thank the doctors and nurses who took such compassionate care of him during his recent decline.
The family will receive friends from 5pm to 7pm on Friday, May 15th at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted the following day at the funeral home at 1pm, with a procession to Winfield Family Cemetery.
