It is with deep sadness that the family of Catherine Hartsook Spence, of Chester, Virginia, announces her passing on September 1, 2025, at the age of ninety-eight.
Catherine was born at home on April 1, 1927, in Lewisburg, West Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Hubert Austin Hartsook and Bessie Gardner Hartsook, and sister of the late Helen Hartsook Garner.
Catherine lived a full life in Lewisburg climbing apple trees, reading books, riding bicycles and horses, and tending to the family's chickens. After graduating from Lewisburg High School, Catherine attended Greenbrier College, where she earned her degree in Fine Arts. Upon graduation from college, Catherine married Don Wilmoth, whom she met at Lewisburg High School, and began working for the Greenbrier County Courts. An avid reader, she also enjoyed traveling, knitting, sewing, gardening, interior decorating, and floral arranging.
Catherine is preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd G. Spence, Sr.; previous husband, Howard R. Will, Jr.; and previous husband, Don H. Wilmoth. She is also preceded in death by her son, R. Dean Wilmoth; step daughter, Penny McCulloch; grandson, Lloyd G. Spence III; and granddaughter, Avery Spence.
Catherine is survived by her children, Vicki Wilmoth Wilson, Shelley Wilmoth, Gregg Wilmoth, and Jennifer McDaniel (Tim); step-children, Cherilyn Mock (Tom), Barbara Reed (Tina), Patricia Sever (Al), Howard Will III, Pam Masters (Larry), Lloyd G. Spence, Jr. (Ellen), Pat Walters (Dan), and Paul Spence (Carolyn); son-in-law, Dave McCullouch (Wendy); as well as twenty-five grandchildren; thirty-eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 11, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, at the Chester Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held Friday, September 12, 2025, at 2:00 pm, at Chester Presbyterian Church, 3424 West Hundred Road, Chester, Virginia, with a reception to follow. Flowers are welcome.
