Carolyn Gatewood Mitchell

Carolyn Gatewood Mitchell, 86, of Hopewell, VA, passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2026. Born in Richmond, VA, she was the daughter of the late Warren Temple, Sr. and Maggie Ruth Garber Gatewood; and was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, William "Billy" Floyd Mitchell; and three siblings, Bertha Townsend, Betty Hughes, and Warren Temple Gatewood, Jr.

Mrs. Mitchell is survived by her son, Donnie Mitchell, Sr. (Monica); daughter, Sherry Nicely (Andrew); son, Bart Mitchell (Mara); seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; her brother, William Gatewood (Chrys); two sisters-in-law, Gailya Gatewood and Sara McCullough; and other extended family and friends.

Mrs. Mitchell spent her life loving, supporting, and raising her children. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grammy, and great-grammy. She loved to cook, quilt, sew, and spend time with her family. Mrs. Mitchell loved her Lord and Savior and was a long-time member of West End Presbyterian Church in Hopewell where she had played on the softball team, sang in the choir, played in the bell choir, served on the Women of the Church and the flower committees and in many other capacities.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2026 at West End Presbyterian Church with Rev. Noah Rivers officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2026 at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Crater Community Hospice in memory of Carolyn Mitchell.
