It is with heavy hearts that we share the peaceful passing of Carlton W. Powell. He was born August 3, 1932, in Roanoke Rapids, NC to Charles and Lillian Powell. He died at the age of 94.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lillian Powell; his brother, Clyde Powell; his sister, Madeline Gray (Lester); and his wife, Shelvey Jean Powell.

Carlton was a proud veteran who served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953. Later he moved to Richmond, VA, where for over 20 years he worked and retired from Reynolds Metals Extrusion Plant. He was married to the love of his life, Shelvey Jean Powell, for 67 years.

Carlton's love for his family was unparalleled. He leaves behind his children, Stephen Powell (Tammy) and Christy Sawyer. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Ashley, Kelli, Amanda, Jeremy, and C.J.; and his great-grandchildren, Trinity, Layla, Alexis, Alex, Carlos, Athena, Lilly, and Ivy. Carlton was also blessed with great-great-grandchildren, Aryah and Emari; and his sister-in-law, Christine Powell.

In his leisure time, Carlton enjoyed riding his golf cart around the neighborhood, always ready for a friendly chat with anyone he encountered. He delighted in taking his grandchildren camping, introducing them to the wonders of campground life. Some of his happiest moments were spent in Brunswick, enjoying the simple pleasures of country life and sharing stories with kin. He was also known as the bicycle man to the neighborhood children and loved working on bikes.

Carlton's family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Tyler's Retreat and At Home Hospice for their compassionate care and support.

A memorial service to celebrate Carlton's life will be held Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son, located at 3050 W. Hundred Rd, Chester, VA 23831.
