Betty Lou Salem, 79, of Hopewell, VA and formally of Ocracoke Island, NC, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2014 at her home in Prince George, VA. Mrs. Salem was born in Hopewell, VA and was the daughter of the late Thelma and Carl Slocum. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Harry M. Salem Jr., her brother, Carl and sister, Gail. Betty was an amazing mother, grandmother and devoted wife. She was an avid fisherwoman, and was a member of the Tiderunners of Ocracoke. She fished over 20 years in the Ocracoke Invitational Fishing Tournament on Ocracoke Island. She enjoyed bowling, painting and making her own fishing lures. She also was a huge fan of stock car racing. Mrs. Salem is survived by her oldest son, Robert Slocum and wife, Jenny of Satellite Beach, Fl.; daughter, Joyce O’Neal of Beaufort, NC; and youngest son, Harry M. Salem, III and wife, Greta of Oaksboro, NC. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Jennifer Slocum and Carmen O’Neal, and three great-grandsons, Brandon, James and Ayden; also special friend, Marty Riggan Moran.
