Betty L. (Dixon) Bennett was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 1st. Born in 1937 and raised in Rainelle, WV, Betty met and married her true love for the next 60 years, Jerris “Jack” Bennett, before leaving home in 1955 to travel the world as an Army Wife. Finally settling down in Hopewell, VA in 1967, Betty worked as a cake decorator and country music singer in addition to raising their five children. As an active participant in the community, Betty was a member of Hopewell’s Adah Chapter #7, Order of the Eastern Star since 1979 and led that organization as Worthy Matron seven times. In addition to her own accomplishments, she was most proud of her family’s active duty military service in defense of our country, totaling 119 years thus far. She is survived by her husband, Jack Bennett (Chief Warrant Officer, U.S. Army Airborne retired and also retired from Park 500 Phillip Morris) of Hopewell, son Roy Bennett (Gunnery Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps retired) and his wife Rhonda of Monroe, NC, son John Bennett (Chief Petty Officer, U.S. Navy retired) and his wife Dawn of Garner, NC, daughter Janice Lackey and her husband Robert (Petty Officer First Class, U.S. Navy retired) of Clayton, NC, and son Lee Bennett (Commander, U.S. Navy) and his wife Angela of Chesapeake, VA. She is also survived by her sister Alice Frashure and her husband Larry of Chester, VA, brother Maynard “Dick” Dixon and his wife Jerri of Prince George, VA, and brother Homer Dixon of Creedmoor, NC. In addition, she is survived by fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Maynard Dillon and Lena Dean Dixon of Hopewell, brother Roy “Tuffy” Dixon of Hopewell, brother Charles “Chuck” Dixon of Hopewell, and son Maynard “Rocky” Bennett (former Petty Officer Second Class, U.S. Navy) of Hopewell. The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm on Wednesday June 3, 2015 at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday June 4, 2015 at the funeral home with interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be donated to the American Lung Association or to the Eastern Star Home of Virginia.
