BURTON, Lt. Col Arthur M., USAF (Retired), 94, of Petersburg, passed away on his birthday, Thursday, June 27, 2013, in Louisville, Kentucky surrounded by loving and devoted family members. He was born and raised in Sheridan County, Indiana. After studies at Butler University, he joined the Air Force in 1941. He served as a multi-engine pilot, electronics officer and chief armament-electronic communications staff officer and bombardier instructor pilot. He was an Assistant Professor of Air Science for the ROTC at the University of Kentucky. Colonel Burton graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor’s Degree in Military Science and Electronics. He earned a Master’s Degree in International Economics from the University of Kentucky. After his retirement from the military, he moved his family to Petersburg and worked as a corporate pilot and sales manager for Titmus Optical Company. He and his wife founded Brickwood Nursery School, which served the Tri-Cities community for 35 years. He was a longstanding member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Petersburg. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Darline McNulty Burton and son, Gregory Burton. He is survived by his children, Elizabeth Holmes and Joyce (William) Jelinek of Denver, Colorado, James (Linda) Burton of Colonial Heights, Deborah (Ronald) Linhorst, Mary (Brian) Lavin and Arthur (Carolyn) Burton, all of Louisville, Kentucky, Bridget (Nathaniel) Cuthbert of Petersburg, and Michael (Lisa) Burton of Hickory, North Carolina. He is also survived by 39 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. His family wishes to thank the entire staff of Kindred Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, for all of their loving care, dedication and support. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 12, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Petersburg. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. in the church commons. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com .
