Alanna Siegfried Graboyes, 77, formerly of Richmond, passed away on June 9, 2025, at her home in Alexandria, VA, surrounded by loved ones.
The only child of Jack and Lillian Siegfried, Alanna was born in Brooklyn and grew up two blocks from the ocean in Far Rockaway, NY. She studied art at Queens College under some of the Twentieth Century's great masters of abstract expressionism. Early in her career, she worked as a textile designer and as a cataloger in several of New York's great museums. She co-authored SoHo, the first book written on the rise of the SoHo Arts District.
For decades, Alanna worked as a librarian, technologist, and educator at Columbia University, CSX Realty, Chesterfield County Public Library, the Maggie L. Walker Governor's School, and George C. Marshall High School.
She was a prolific artist, producing hundreds of paintings on canvas and fabric. Her works can be seen at her website (asgraboyesart.com).
Alanna is survived by her husband of 40 years, Robert; her son, Jeremy (David); her beloved cousins, Jerilyn Weissman (Alex) and Carl Fass (Sheryl); brother-in-law, Arnold Graboyes (Kathie); and other family and friends, near and far.
Cantor Sarah Beck-Berman will conduct a graveside service at the Brith Achim Cemetery, on Crater Road in Petersburg, on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at 1:30 p.m.
During her final fifteen months, Alanna grappled with myelodysplastic syndrome. Fortunately, she was able to maintain boundless energy, optimism, and humor to the very end. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Inova Health Foundation (join.inova.org/tribute) to support and celebrate the magnificent medical practitioners who granted her the gift of an extra year of life.
