    Edwin Richard Hanser

    May 14, 1940 - February 8, 2021

    Edwin. R. “Dick” Hanser, 80, of Hopewell, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Monday, February 8, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Edna Hanser; infant daughter Amy Laura; and brother, Franklin Hanser. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Betty Hanser; children, Amy (Anthony) Chavis, Robert (Traci) Hanser; grandkids, Dakota and Dawson Chavis, Madryn, Jackson & Mollie Jane Hanser; siblings, Wilma Ashton and Tom Hanser and numerous nieces and nephews. Dick was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid shooter and artilleryman. Over the years he won many individual competitions as well as artillery matches with his self-crafted Civil War cannon. He enjoyed boating and exploring the James River and Tidewater area. He was an avid reader and writer and often contributed to the editorial page of local newspapers lending a voice to injustices as he saw them. One of his greatest passions was the feral cats at City Point. He fed and cared for them daily, often speaking up in their defense by writing letters to the editor. Dick was a Navy Veteran. He was Senior Lab Technician for Allied/Honeywell – Polymer Research for 42 years. He was a member of the North-South Skirmish Association and the Conservation Park of Virginia. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 14, 2021 at the Hopewell chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. The Family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Humane Society of Hopewell.
