A. Douglas Steinberg, surrounded by his family, passed away on July 23, 2022 after a long illness. Born on January 30, 1929 in Irvington, NJ, to Franklyn C. and Agnes M. (née Meister) Steinberg, Doug was 93. He was the younger brother of Franklyn C. Steinberg, Jr. His mother died when Doug was age 4. Many years later his father married Jean N. Paquin. Doug was raised in Irvington and Maplewood, NJ. He graduated from Columbia High School in Maplewood, and attended Upsala College in East Orange, NJ. He enlisted in the Army and served in the Korean War as a clerk stationed in Italy, before being honorably discharged in December of 1956. After military service, Doug became a partner at Advertisers Sign and Display Company, a business started by his father that sold point-of-purchase advertising products. Doug worked in the industry until retiring in the 1990's. A devoted Republican, he was active with the Young Republicans of Maplewood, NJ, serving as chairman of the organization in the 1950s. It was there that he met his first wife, Priscilla Leach. Doug and Priscilla married on September 20, 1958 in Adams, MA. They had three sons: A. Douglas, Jr. (Kristi), Richard A. (Elizabeth), and Christopher D. (Danielle). They lived on Old Orchard Road in Mendham Township, NJ, a close-knit and gregarious neighborhood where good times were had by all. The family was active in Brookside Community Church, where Doug served as a Deacon, Trustee and choir member. After Priscilla's death in 1977, Doug married Janet W. Robinson on October 3, 1987. Janet's children, Tucker Robinson (Jeanne), Constance Bainton (Bob), Joyce Farmer (Larry) and David Robinson (Mary), became Doug's new extended family. He enjoyed being grandfather to their kids, Josh and Andrew Robinson, Carrie Robinson, Sarah and Gwen Farmer, and James and Brooks Robinson, and great-grandfather to Lydia and Christian Robinson. Doug and Janet were active members of the Mendham Township Volunteer First Aid Squad. In 2000, Doug and Janet relocated to Williamsburg, VA where he was active in the Kiwanis Club, and then to Chesterfield, VA in 2007, where they joined Bethia United Methodist Church. Doug enjoyed aviation, model trains, big band music, watching car races, tinkering around the house, and, above all, spending time with his family. Doug was a great conversationalist (which contributed to his success as a salesman), and a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. His immense love of family and friends was apparent as they were always his favorite topic of conversation. A DIY kind of guy, he could fix and make anything work. He loved iced coffee, ice cream and Johnnie Walker Red. He will be best remembered for his love of laughter, whether entertaining and making others laugh or when others made him laugh. Services will be held at Bethia United Methodist Church in Chesterfield, VA on Saturday, August 6 at 1:00pm. Services will also be held in Brookside, NJ, followed by burial at Hilltop Cemetery, Mendham, NJ (date to be determined.)
