Burial Information
The act of burying the dead in the ground is thought to havebegun around 200,000 years ago, and still today, is the most common method of disposition. As a result, cemeteries and memorial parks are found throughout the world. In modern times, the custom of burying dead people below ground with a stone or bronze marker to mark the place is used in almost every modern culture.
Traditional burial services usually consist of preparing the remains for viewing, by embalming, dressing, and placement of the remains in a casket. In most cases, there is a visitation scheduled, for family members and friends to gather at the funeral home for a period of time, to visit with one another and to view the remains. This is usually done in the afternoon or evening, one day prior to the funeral service. In some cases, the visitation is scheduled to take place just prior to the funeral service. Viewing may be public, private, or not at all. This is left strictly up to the family.
The funeral service may take place in the funeral home chapel,at a church, or at the graveside. Following a service in the chapel or church, family members and friends drive in a procession to the cemetery, where there is a brief service of interment or entombment. Funeral services can be elaborate or simple, traditional or non-traditional. Funerals today are as unique as the individuals they are planned for.
J. T. Morriss & Son offers families a wide selection of caskets, burial vaults, and memorial items. Selecting a casket gives you an opportunity to personalize the service. You can choose from a wide variety of casket materials, including bronze, copper, several species of wood, stainless steel, and carbon steel. Whatever it is you are looking for, we can find a casket to fit your particular need. Along with a traditional ground burial, you must choose a burial vault (which would not be needed for mausoleum entombment). Most cemeteries require burial vaults to help protect the casket and to prevent the grave from settling. In turn, this helps to preserve the quality of the casket as well as keep the cemetery looking nice. Memorial items include guest register books, memorial folders, personalized acknowledgement cards, and laminated obituary keepsakes. You may choose from a variety of items from the very simple to the ornate. We are here to assist you and your family on all of the available options.
